The USS Cario was the first armed vessel in History to be sunk by a torpedo.

A large awning covers the entire display for both weather and protection for visitors

The frontal view of the vessel the Cario stayed underwater for years, which destroyed much of the wood

The front of the Cario contained several cannons

Looking from the rear of the vessel to the paddle wheel discharge area

Their were 5 boilers that powered the paddle wheel

The boilers transferred the steam power to the mechanical components which turned the paddlewheel

This plaque told of how the Confederate solders sank the Cario

After leaving the Cario Exhibit, we drove thru the National Military Cemetery, there are over 17,000 soldiers buried here and over 13,000 of the bodies never were identified, and are only marked with a simple square numbered grave marker on it (small markers) - according to one of the guides.

The Vicksburg National Cemetery has been closed for burials since 1963, except for a few individuals whose applications for interment had been validated prior to that time.

The 116 acre Cemetary is the final resting place of 17,000 Soldiers, a number unmatched by any other national cemetery.
